To be honest, I’m torn between writing a more in-depth bio or just leaving the one to the left as is. That pretty much covers the important stuff about me: books, chai, writing, dog, family, roots, love. Everything else seems trivial, right?
Even so, here goes. I studied journalism and creative writing at the University of Miami, which taught me that there can be truth in fiction and fiction in the truth. While I was still in college, I worked in a variety of jobs in the communications industry—an ad agency, a PR company, then at several magazines. My first post-grad job was a managing editor position at a startup luxury lifestyle magazine on Miami Beach. While most wouldn’t think of planning photo shoots on a sandy white beach and writing about $4000 skirts as a dose of reality, the experience was an eye-opener for me. I started freelancing full-time in 2006 because I realized that I’d always said I wanted to write a novel, and so far hadn’t written more than 60 pages of one.
The best decision I ever made for my personal well-being was to give writing fiction the same place in my life as it had in my dreams. This blog sort of evolved from that place, surprising me in the process. It’s a space for honesty about the creative process and my life.
Maybe that’s not too trivial after all.
